The
Aloi Family
Raffaele Aloi was
born in 1870 in
Santa Maria
di
Catanzaro
in
Italy
. He made his first trip to the
United States
in 1890 aboard this ship" The Lahn".
In
the
United States
his first name became Ralph. He began working in the construction of railroads
both on Shawmut and Pennsy Railroads. Soon he returned to
Italy
and married his wife Angela. Everyone called her Angelina. This name in Italian
means little Angela. Ralph returned to the
United States
to work even though his wife was pregnant. A baby girl was born but died in
infancy. Again Ralph made a return trip to
Italy
. On November 1, 1899 a son named Felix was born to the couple. Ralph returned
to the
United States
again to work. In 1903 he returned to
Italy
to escort his wife and son to Clermont. They arrived in
Ellis Island
on March 4,1903 aboard the " Hohenzollern" shown here.
As
soon as they arrived by train they found a house in the "Patch" and
Ralph went back to work with the railroad. 1904 brought two important events for
the Aloi family. The first was the opening of the factory and the second was the
birth of a son. They decided to name the boy John but the Clermont people called
him Jack most of the time. Soon the family moved into the John Steinhauer home
and eventually bought it. Three more children were born to the family.
They were named Teresa, Frank and Sam. Here is a photo of the Aloi family.
John passed away several years ago and is buried in St
Elizabeth Cemetery in Smethport. In fact Esther Aloi, John's widow, lived in the
Aloi house until recently. She became ill and in 2004 she resides in a
nursing home in St Marys, PA. John and Esther Aloi have two sons and are named
Jim and Ralph. One named for each of their grandparents, Jim Sample and Ralph
Aloi. They both live in St Marys, are married and have both children and
grandchildren.
