The Rizzo Family

 

Francesco Rizzo was born in Sersale, Italy in 1857 and came to the United States as a young man on this ship the "Europa".

 

 

Frank Rizzo as he was known in Clermont worked at the Gumboot Mines and became a foreman. He was instrumental in establishing a "Bocce" court at Dale for the Italian miners.

Here is another photo of Frank Rizzo.

 Maria Teresa was born in 1867. She and Frank were married in Sersale, Italy. Their oldest  children Tony and Carmela were born there and came to America with their mother.  Frank and his wife had 5 children. They were Carmela. Tony, Lewis, Teresa and Mary. Mrs. Rizzo died in 1919 and is buried in St Elizabeth Cemetery in Smethport, PA. The oldest boy, Tony, became a Pharmacist and moved to Syracuse, N. Y. He married a divorced lady named Leah who had several children.

 

Carmella married Ralph Rocco. They had six children, but only three lived. They were named Peter, Angela (Rena), and Thomas. In 2004 Peter is still living and will be 100 in August of 2004. Mr. Rocco was killed in a mine accident at the Gumboot Mine outside of  Clermont. After his death Carmella married Ralph Salatino. Ralph was born in Cosenza, Italy in 1876. Ralph was employed at the Clermont Tile Factory.  He worked in the yard and was a foreman of one of the crews. The family lived in the Queen Row of the company houses. Here is a photo of their house.

Carmella and Ralph Salatino also had 6 children but only three lived. The three were Kathryn, Sister Lucy, and Theresa. In 2004 they are all deceased. Here is a Photo of two of the sisters with their half brother Peter Rocco.

Theresa was nicknamed Daisy. The following is a photo of her as a young girl.

 

Another Photo shows Frank Rizzo with several friends and four children. Three of the children are his grandchildren and the other is his daughter Mary. The grandchildren are the children of Ralph and Carmella Rocco.

 

The Salatino Family left Clermont in about 1925 and moved to Monaca, PA. Carmella Rizzo Rocco Salatino passed away at the age of 58 and is buried in Monaca , PA.

  Louie as Lewis was known married Georgia Barstow and moved to Beaver Falls, PA. He went to work for the United Postal Service by sorting mail on the trains between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. They had two children who still live there. Mary married Peter Equizi and moved to Monaca, PA. Peter was a tailor and had a business first in Rochester and later in Monaca. They had two children named Sonny and Delores.  Delores is married to Gino DeSantis and provided information for the Clermont history. After the children left home Frank lived alone until he had a stroke in 1940. He passed away in Beaver Falls, PA. and is buried there.
